The serratus anterior is a muscle group with multiple heads that connects the ribs to the inside of the scapula,. Weakness in the serratus anterior results in winging of the scapula




Relaxing


Relaxing and lengthening the serratus anterior opens the chest and draws the scapula toward each other.


Postures that lengthen the erector spinae include:

Padmasana with side bend




Contracting


Contracting the serratus anterior protracts the scapula, drawing them forward and outward..


Postures that strengthen the erector spinae include:

Chaturanga Dandasana
