Have you been feeling hot or cold lately? I'm not talking on the outside in terms of temperature, but on the inside.

I don't think many of us would consider ourselves to be coldhearted, but it seems that most of us could use a little bit of warming up. Especially during these strange times, the love for others is at an all time low. Perhaps, we love those very close to us, but fear of catching a virus has bred fear of the other. Rather than smiling and waving, now people cover their faces and cross the street. It's a totally different world.

While many would say that this is out of self protection or protection of others, what we have done is closed ourselves off, leading with fear over love. This is an example of coldheartedness over warmheartedness. Those who are less spiritually inclined may not understand these words, but on a very basic level, in the words of late President Roosevelt, "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself." The animal side of ourselves is expert in convincing us that we need to protect ourselves. But the spiritual side of ourselves reminds us that everything is energy and that we in fact attract and even manifest in real life what we focus our attention on in our minds, whether it be fear of the other or an illness.

As we become increasingly fearful and cold toward others, we actually shut ourselves down, turning off our internal fire and making us more susceptible to both physical and mental illness. It is this internal fire or heat (tapas) that gives us things like self-confidence, willpower, connection to others, good digestion, and the ability to remove toxins from the body. On an energetic level, we would say this is related to the solar plexus chakra, which is located in the upper abdomen, and on a physical level, we would say this is related to the internal organs like the intestines and liver that allow us to create energy from our food and maintain the balance of our blood and internal systems.

When this fire is weak, we may physically have digestive or elimination problems, have low energy with no explanation, poor or unstable mood, physical weakness, and a lack of drive due to the buildup of ama or waste/toxins in the body. When this fire is built up by practices such as yoga, pranayama, other forms of exercise, and foods that burn well, the body can better digest food and clean the blood, allowing for better flow within the body and a better, more energized feeling overall.

Today, Spirit is telling us to warm up. You get what you give. If you lead with fear and coldness, like an ice chiller, it creates stagnation, and it becomes harder to receive and create the good things that we want. But when you lead with warmth and love, those things come back in abundance.

So why fear? The only thing you have to fear is fear itself.
